A probable diagnosis of chancroid can be made if all of the following criteria are met:
One or more painful genital ulcers are present.
The clinical presentation, appearance of the genital ulcer(s), with or without regional lymphadenitis, is consistent with chancroid.
No evidence of Treponema pallidum infection by darkfield examination or nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), with ulcer exudate or serous fluid, or by serological tests for syphilis performed at least 7-14 days after onset of ulcers.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 or HSV-2 NAAT or HSV culture performed on the ulcer exudate or fluid are negative.
