Centers for Disease Control and Prevention sexually transmitted infections treatment guidelines[55]

A probable diagnosis of chancroid can be made if all of the following criteria are met:

  • One or more painful genital ulcers are present.

  • The clinical presentation, appearance of the genital ulcer(s), with or without regional lymphadenitis, is consistent with chancroid.

  • No evidence of Treponema pallidum infection by darkfield examination or nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT), with ulcer exudate or serous fluid, or by serological tests for syphilis performed at least 7-14 days after onset of ulcers.

  • Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 or HSV-2 NAAT or HSV culture performed on the ulcer exudate or fluid are negative.
