Monitoring

Follow-up imaging is recommended 6 to 12 weeks after traumatic fractures treated by operative or conservative treatments. Expert opinion suggests that before removing a brace or getting into more vigorous sporting activities, patients should be examined by spinal surgeons (usually after 3 months) in follow-up clinics to assess fracture healing and spinal instability. If spinal instability is present, then a further period of conservative treatment may be required, or operative treatment may be indicated.
