Epidemiology
In one 2018 systematic review, the global prevalence of oral leukoplakia was reported to be 4.1%.[8] In the US the overall prevalence of leukoplakia is low (approximately 1% to 2%, although this increases with age). Leukoplakia is most commonly seen in middle-aged and older men; it is uncommon in men ages below 30 years.[9] In other regions (e.g., South Asia) where risk factors are common (e.g., areca nut [betel quid] and smokeless tobacco use), the prevalence is higher (7.8%).[8]
