Epidemiology
The overall incidence of primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) has been reported as 17 to 24 per annum for men and 1 to 6 per annum for women based on small studies and the analysis of two national databases in England and France.[7][8] More than 50,000 trauma-related pneumothoraces occur annually in the US, with chest trauma victims obtaining these up to 50% of the time. Pneumothorax ranks second only to rib fractures as the most common manifestation of significant chest injury.[9][10][11]
