Approach
Patients with DJS require no specific treatment. Although jaundice is a lifelong finding, it is associated with no morbidity or mortality.[45] It is generally considered to be a benign disease requiring only reassurance and avoidance of unnecessary invasive diagnostic procedures.
Phenobarbital has been trialed in an attempt to reduce the serum bilirubin concentration, but the results have been highly variable. Some patients with nonspecific abdominal complaints report amelioration of their vague symptoms with phenobarbital therapy, irrespective of any lowering of the serum bilirubin concentration. However, chronic phenobarbital administration is not recommended.[33]
