Primary prevention

Treatments for associated precipitating factors, such as retching, vomiting, coughing, and straining, may reduce the risk of MWT. Limiting intake of alcohol, aspirin, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may also help to prevent the disorder.

Secondary prevention

Recurrence of MWT is rare. However, it is important to counsel patients about precipitating factors such as alcohol, vomiting, excessive straining, lifting, and persistent cough that may lead to a recurrence. Limiting endoscopy time and the air inflow during endoscopy may prevent further or new tearing of the esophago-gastro-enteric mucosa.
