Monitoring
Follow-up includes further assessment of the patient’s pain, mobility, and falls risk, as well as evaluation for any walking aids that may be of benefit.
The presence of anxiety and low mood should also be assessed with support and therapy provided as needed.[57]
The pressure effects on skin by orthoses should be monitored, particularly in people with reduced cutaneous sensation. Advice should be sought from tissue viability services and/or plastic surgery specialists as needed.[102]
General measures to prevent further bone loss may be discussed, including dietary assessment for adequate calcium and vitamin D.[11]
Medications for osteoporosis prophylaxis require monitoring for adherence and any adverse effects.[11]
Various exercise programmes will help to prevent extension of osteoporosis.
Serial (standing) whole spine radiographs are usually performed following the fracture/surgery at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months (yearly thereafter if required). These are assessed for any progression of local kyphosis as a result of the fracture and overall sagittal balance.
