Monitoring

Triglyceride (TG) levels should be monitored every 6 weeks during initiation and optimisation of treatment. Once desirable levels are achieved and are stable, the lipid profile should be checked every 6-12 months.

Liver function tests should be checked before using statins or fibric acid derivatives. Recheck each time the dose is adjusted, then monitor every 6-12 months once on a stable dose.

In addition to reviewing pharmaceutical instructions, practitioners should emphasise the role of lifestyle, particularly diet and exercise, in reducing TG levels.
