Primary prevention

Primary prevention of chancroid and other sexually transmitted infections includes promoting abstinence from drugs and alcohol, consistent use of condoms, limiting the number of sex partners, and avoiding high-risk sex partners.[43] For sex workers, a 100% condom use policy should be strongly encouraged and regular health care provided with presumptive treatment of infections.

Secondary prevention

Contact tracing is very important; all sexual contacts within the 10 days prior to symptom development should be traced and treated, even if asymptomatic. Spread of infection is very effectively prevented by 100% condom use.

High-risk sexual activities and multiple sex partners should be avoided.[55]
