Primary prevention
Although the etiologies of cleft lip and palate are multifactorial, several recommendations are suggested. Avoidance of teratogenic medications during pregnancy is mandatory. Furthermore, seizure medications should be adjusted by a neurologist before conception, to prevent teratogen exposure. Prenatal multivitamins (including folic acid supplementation), antismoking counseling, and advice on the importance of minimizing perinatal alcohol consumption are strongly encouraged.
