Monitoring
Patients should be reviewed no later than 8 weeks after starting treatment to ensure symptoms have resolved.[4] Once healing has occurred, patients should be advised to increase their fiber and fluid intake. They should be warned that anal fissure can return, especially if treated by nonsurgical means. If they experience symptoms, they should contact their doctor and begin treatment again with topical ointments. This will lead to healing in a large proportion of patients. If healing does not occur, or the patient desires more definitive treatment, surgery should be considered.[16]
