Epidemiology

Incidence is around 1 in 350 adults, and other estimates report an incidence of 0.11% per year.[1][5] It is equally common in men and women and often affects young adults, with incidence in women peaking at ages 18 to 24 years and in men ages 25 to 34 years, although it may be seen in older adults.[5] It may also occur in children due to poor toileting, and in one analysis of 1243 patients treated for anal fissure, 12% were children ages 6 to 17 years.[5]
