Long bone fracture

For nondisplaced fractures that are immobilized in a protective splint, the patient is generally instructed to follow up with an orthopedic surgeon in 3 to 5 days. After the initial swelling has subsided, conversion to an appropriate cast is often the definitive treatment. Serial x-rays are often performed on a weekly basis for the first 3 weeks to ensure maintenance of satisfactory alignment, and serial cast changes may be needed to ensure proper immobilization, fit, and comfort.

For other types of fractures, monitoring will depend on whether the patient had surgery, whether they are inpatients or outpatients, and whether there are any other active medical or surgical issues.
