Patient discussions
Follow-up should be scheduled and the patient advised to use eye medications as prescribed. Caution patients against stopping eye medications without consulting their doctor, and to contact their optometrist or ophthalmologist if they develop any vision changes, redness, or pain.
Psychosocial function and mobility issues can arise particularly early in patients with glaucoma (e.g., with peripheral field loss). Provide information about vision rehabilitation to patients with any degree of vision loss, because even early loss can be associated with disability.
Patients should be educated about the disease process and the importance of conscientious eye care.[1][33] Patient information leaflets are available; for example, Glaucoma (open angle) and JAMA: what is glaucoma? Opens in new window
