Monitoring
Monitoring is required in relation to the emergence of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) in other body areas. Patients who have had one BCC have a ≥30% risk of developing a second BCC.[97][98] Patients with multiple BCCs are not uncommon. Patients should be monitored, including a complete skin exam, every 6-12 months for the first 5 years, and then at least annually for life.[44]
Follow-up with a dermatologist is strongly recommended for patients with any of the following criteria:[44]
Past or imminent solid organ
Marrow, or hematopoietic cell transplant
One or more cutaneous melanomas in the past 5 years
Four or more nonmelanoma skin cancers in the past 5 years
Patients should be evaluated for other solar-induced cancers, such as squamous cell carcinoma of lip and skin, and melanoma.
