Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy of the skin in white adults in the US, Australia, and Europe, and its incidence is increasing.[12]Hu W, Fang L, Ni R, et al. Changing trends in the disease burden of non-melanoma skin cancer globally from 1990 to 2019 and its predicted level in 25 years. BMC Cancer. 2022 Jul 30;22(1):836.

CRUK: cancer incidence statistics
Opens in new window BCC occurs in all ethnicities, and it may be missed in Asian and black skin.[14]Maybury CM, Craythorne E, Martin B. An ulcerated nodule on the nose. BMJ Case Rep. 2013 Apr 16;2013:bcr2012008296.

BCC may not be reported to cancer registries or, when it is, may be recorded under the term "nonmelanoma skin cancer."[15]Ciążyńska M, Kamińska-Winciorek G, Lange D, et al. The incidence and clinical analysis of non-melanoma skin cancer. Sci Rep. 2021 Feb 22;11(1):4337.

Determining the exact incidence of BCC is therefore difficult. Using procedure rate code numbers from a US Medicare dataset and claims filed for approved procedures with associated ICD-9-CM (International Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision) diagnosis codes, the 2012 age-adjusted procedure rate for BCC was estimated to be 3280 per 100,000 beneficiaries.[16]Rogers HW, Weinstock MA, Feldman SR, et al.
