No evidence exists to indicate that treatment of genital warts decreases the rate of transmission.[71] The only way to completely prevent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is through abstinence.[3] Barrier methods of contraception such as condoms may decrease the risk of transmission but are not entirely effective.[28] An FDA-approved HPV vaccine is recommended for the prevention of genital warts in children and adults between ages 9 and 45 years.[31] In the UK, HPV vaccination is recommended for all children ages 12 to 13 years, and for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men ≤45 years.[70][73] Recommended online resources may be helpful.
