Epidemiology
HS can be found in all populations, but is most common in people of Northern European ancestry. The prevalence in this group is approximately 1 in 5000.[5][12] Screening of blood donors suggests mild forms may be more common (prevalence up to 1 in 800 women and 1 in 150 in men).[13] These very mild forms are probably of no clinical significance. HS has only rarely been described in black people. It occurs in people of either sex and can present at any age, partly determined by clinical severity.
