Primary prevention

Good breast-feeding habits (e.g., emptying breasts fully and proper latching) and proper nipple hygiene may help minimize the risk of developing lactational mastitis. Sterile equipment and techniques should be used for nipple piercing, although this does not eliminate the risk of infection in the long term.

Secondary prevention

Prompt treatment of mastitis will help to prevent complications such as a breast abscess. During lactation, continued breast-feeding should be encouraged if feasible. Smoking cessation should also be encouraged, to minimize the risk of recurrence.
