Epidemiology

The global prevalence of mastitis in lactating women is approximately 10%, with estimates ranging between 2.5% and 20%.[1][2] Duct ectasia (periductal mastitis or dilated ducts associated with inflammation) occurs in 5% to 9% of nonlactating women. Breast abscess develops in 3% to 11% of women with mastitis, with a reported incidence of 0.1% to 3.0% in breast-feeding women.[3][4][5]

Tubercular mastitis is rare, even in tuberculosis-endemic countries, with a reported incidence between 0.1% and 3.0%.[6][7][8] Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis is a very rare breast condition.[9]
