Secondary prevention
Patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency should avoid substances known to precipitate attacks, such as naphthalene, fava beans, sulphonamides, nitrofurantoin, salicylates, nitrites, dapsone, ribavirin, phenazopyridine, or paraquat.
Vaccination against encapsulated organisms such as Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae should be performed as early as possible in cases that may be treated with splenectomy. Prophylactic antibodies should be started post-splenectomy.[37]
