Epidemiology
As physiological chronological skin ageing is the main aetiology, all people will develop wrinkles with increasing age. Moderate and severe facial wrinkles commonly become evident after the age of 40 years.[1] The effect of smoking on facial wrinkles is greater in women than in men.[1] Progress of skin ageing features differs with ethnic group. Black and Asian people are less prone than white people to wrinkles.[2] The onset of facial wrinkling is delayed in Chinese women, who appear to experience a fast ageing process between the age of 40 and 50 years.[3] People with white skin (type I to III on the Fitzpatrick classification) are more susceptible than people with other skin types to solar damage and photoageing.[4]
