Emerging treatments
Platelet-rich plasma
Platelet-rich plasma is an autologous concentration of human platelets contained in a small volume of plasma that has been used in the treatment of wrinkles. One small study has shown that platelet-rich plasma used in combination with fractional laser may rejuvenate ageing skin.[105][106]
Autologous fibroblast therapy
The availability of autologous cell therapy marks the beginning of a new phase in aesthetic therapy. In one multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, adults with moderate to very severe nasolabial fold wrinkles showed significant 1-point improvement on a validated wrinkle assessment scale following treatment with autologous fibroblasts.[107] More studies are needed to further demonstrate safety and efficacy.
1072 nm light
The use of 1072 nm light for prevention and treatment of wrinkles around the eye has been investigated.[108] It is based on research showing that pre-irradiation of human lymphocytes can give some protection to ultraviolet light toxicity.
