Case history #1

A 24-year-old man presents with copious urethral discharge 4 days after having unprotected sex with a new partner. He is HIV-negative but has a history of prior sexually transmitted infection treatments.

Case history #2

A 20-year-old woman presents with vaginal discharge, dysuria, and dyspareunia. Her last sex partner got "a shot and some antibiotics", but she is not sure for what. She "sometimes" uses condoms.

Other presentations

Patients may present with sequelae of urethritis. Women may have symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease such as fever, abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, nausea, vomiting, dysuria, and/or irregular menses. Infertility may result. A baby born to a mother with active disease may have conjunctivitis, iritis, otitis media, or pneumonia. Males may develop urethral strictures, stenosis, prostatitis, epididymitis, abscess, proctitis, and infertility. In <3% of cases, patients may present with complications such as reactive arthritis (a triad of non-gonococcal urethritis, anterior uveitis, and arthritis) or disseminated gonococcal infection.[2][3]​​
