Screening asymptomatic individuals for detection of hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease is not recommended.[74][75] However, during routine tests for other indications, a number of otherwise asymptomatic individuals may be diagnosed with subclinical hyperthyroidism due to Graves’ disease.

Screening for maternal thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy

US guidelines recommend targeted thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) testing for women with increased risk of thyroid disease (e.g., personal or family history of thyroid disease, type 1 diabetes, clinical suspicion of thyroid disease) who are pregnant or are planning pregnancy.[76][77]

Universal screening for thyroid disease in pregnancy is not recommended.[76][77]
