Patients should participate in prevention strategies that improve their liver function. Self-help management will depend on the aetiology of the portal hypertension. For example, patients with alcoholic liver disease should be encouraged to reduce or cease alcohol use, especially when they have had an episode of variceal bleeding. In most other aetiologies of portal hypertension, patient education is also an important aspect of ongoing management.
