Criteria

Management of adults with hospital-acquired pneumonia and ventilator-associated pneumonia: 2016 clinical practice guidelines by the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Thoracic Society[1]

A diagnosis of HAP requires a new and/or persistent shadowing (consolidation) on chest x-ray, which is otherwise unexplained, plus at least two of the following:

  • Fever >38ºC (>100ºF)

  • Leukocytosis (WBC >10 x 109/L) or leucopenia (WBC <4 x 109/L)

  • Purulent sputum

  • Decline in oxygenation.
