Primary prevention

There are no established guidelines for the primary prevention of paradoxical vocal fold motion (intermittent laryngeal obstruction).

Secondary prevention

Patients with confirmed paradoxical vocal fold motion (intermittent laryngeal obstruction) may be at increased risk of recurrence following:

  • Weight gain

  • Surgery with intubation

  • Upper respiratory illness

  • Voice disorders

  • Environmental irritant exposure

  • Ongoing GORD

  • Ongoing laryngopharyngeal reflux
