An 18-year-old woman presents with a foul-smelling vaginal discharge that has caused severe genital irritation and postcoital spotting. She reports multiple sexual partners and recent unprotected vaginal intercourse.

Case history #2

A 33-year-old nulligravida presents to an infertility clinic after not being able to conceive for the last 14 months. Her review of systems is significant for acyclic pelvic pain. She states she was treated for Chlamydia trachomatis 5 years ago, and has the same sexual partner.

Other presentations

Atypical presentations include paediatric patients with a history of sexual abuse, trauma, or a vaginal foreign body; pathology report of chronic, asymptomatic cervicitis in a patient being screened for IUD placement; and non-specific cervicitis on a hysterectomy specimen.
