Prognosis

The prognosis for patients is excellent with appropriate and timely treatment. Potential complications associated with delayed treatment or persistent infection are pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), tubo-ovarian abscess, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, or infertility. Adolescents are at high risk of recurrent cervicitis, up to 9.3%, particularly if the initial infection is with Neisseria gonorrhoeae.[31] Findings from a prospective cohort suggest that the risk of subsequent tubal-factor infertility, resulting from subclinical PID, may not always be preventable even in the setting of adequate antimicrobial therapy.[32]
