Polymorphous light eruption

PLE is a benign skin disease that resolves spontaneously, without leaving permanent skin changes; however, it can be the cause of pronounced emotional stress.

Prophylactic treatment is sometimes ineffective and may also bear potential long-term risk, including a risk of skin cancer development after psoralen (8-methoxypsoralen) and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy.

PLE shows annual recurrences over the course of many years.
