Primary prevention
In patients with atopic dermatitis, avoiding environmental triggers such as irritating or tight clothing and excessive sweating to reduce the risk of a flare helps to prevent the development of secondary LSC. Prompt repair of the epidermal barrier through the application of emollients and topical corticosteroids following a flare are also important measures in the prevention of secondary LSC.[2]
Secondary prevention
Maintenance of an intact epidermal barrier, especially in the presence of underlying atopic dermatitis, with frequent application of a bland, nonperfumed cream or ointment emollient is extremely important in the prevention of LSC. The most efficacious time to apply an emollient is immediately after showering while the skin is still moist.
In recurrent LSC, maintenance of an intact epidermal barrier and prompt application of a potent topical corticosteroid in the event of a flare is crucial to prevent lichenification of the skin and stimulation of the itch-scratch cycle.
