Monitoring

As classical cutaneous lichen planus is a self-limiting disease, routine monitoring is usually not required.

For vulvar LP, guidelines recommend follow-up at 2-3 months to assess treatment response.[28][51] Thereafter, annual monitoring in primary care is appropriate for patients with stable disease. Patients with erosive LP require specialist follow-up long term.[28]

Patients with erosive oral or genital lichen planus need to be monitored regularly for possible squamous cell carcinoma occurring at these sites.
