Primary prevention

Contact lens hygiene and avoiding overnight lens wear are key factors in avoiding keratitis. Protective eyewear during dangerous activities and prompt medical attention after ocular trauma are also important.[4] Predisposing conditions such as dry eye, trichiasis, and recurrent erosions should be treated.

Prenatal screening is used to prevent neonatal keratitis (herpes simplex virus, gonococcal).

Secondary prevention

In recurrent herpetic keratitis, prophylactic antiviral medication such as acyclovir may be used to reduce the number of episodes, especially in patients who have undergone corneal transplant surgery.[7][40][64]
