Primary prevention

There is no way to prevent uveitis. However, traumatic uveitis may be avoided through use of protective eye gear in athletic activities (e.g., racquetball or squash), scientific laboratory work, and industrial occupations. Any activity that includes the possibility of liquid or solid projectiles warrants protection. To help prevent infection, careful hand washing, especially after contact with sick people, is recommended prior to touching the eye. Postoperatively, cataract and other ophthalmologic patients should use antibiotic drops as indicated, to prevent infection. Proper handling of food (e.g., meat) helps to prevent infections such as toxoplasmosis. In conditions caused by sexually transmitted diseases, proper protection helps to prevent the transmission of the disease leading to systemic infection and infectious uveitis.
