Case history
A 41-year-old man with obesity (BMI >30) presents with a complaint of chronic, loud snoring but reportedly no gasping episodes during sleep. His wife sleeps separately due to the loud snoring, but previously there were no witnessed apneas. He reports a refreshing sleep and no morning headaches or excessive daytime somnolence. He smokes and drinks alcohol. He is reluctant to stay overnight with friends or family, or at holiday accommodation, due to his loud disruptive snoring.
Other presentations
Snoring is common in children under the age of 6 years due to physiologic adenotonsillar hyperplasia. This normally resolves with age and no treatment is required unless it is associated with obstructive sleep apnea.[4]
