Primary prevention

No specific prevention strategies are currently known. However, tumour surveillance strategies should be employed to detect the development of tumours early in children with selected genetic syndromes as these patients are known to have an increased risk of developing Wilms' tumour.[3][31] Genetic and antenatal counselling should be offered to parents with a family history of Wilms' tumour.[32][33] Prophylactic bilateral nephrectomy may be considered in patients with Denys-Drash syndrome as the vast majority of these patients develop Wilms' tumour.[34]
