A 52-year-old man presents complaining of anorexia, malaise, diarrhoea, and vomiting over the past week. He reports little fluid or food intake.
Case history #2
A 78-year-old woman is hospitalised because of a femur fracture. After being operated on, she presents with fever and an aminoglycoside antibiotic is prescribed. After 5 days the patient's condition deteriorates and a blood test discloses a creatinine level of 707 micromol/L (8 mg/dL) (normal range 44 to 88 micromol/L [0.5 to 1.0 mg/dL]).
