Primary prevention

Primary prevention entails avoiding rodent excreta-contaminated areas, particularly in enclosed dwellings. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has outlined several prevention measures that include rodent proofing and rodent trapping in and around dwellings and outbuildings.

There are no vaccines available against the hantaviruses causing hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS). In animal models, immunisation with a variety of hantavirus proteins seems to be protective against the infection.[43]

Secondary prevention

Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) is a notifiable condition in some countries.

Although survival from hantavirus infection may provide lifetime immunity to subsequent infection, the patient should work with local health and rodent-control authorities to rodent-proof their dwellings and outbuildings.[72]
