Primary prevention

Dietary iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production and prevention of nodular goitre.[21] Iodisation of salt and other foods in many countries has made toxic nodules a relatively uncommon cause of hyperthyroidism, but iodine deficiency remains a major public health problem worldwide.[8][13][22]

Secondary prevention

Iodinated contrast or high-dose iodine supplementation should be avoided in people who have autonomously functioning thyroid nodules.[14] Administration may result in the Jod-Basedow effect (iodine-induced hyperthyroidism) and may preclude radioactive iodine treatment for a period of time.
