Patient discussions
Patients with repaired aortic coarctation should continue to have routine follow-up with a cardiologist throughout their lifetime. These patients can typically lead normally active lives without restriction. Patients with arterial hypertension, residual obstruction, or other complicating factors should be cautioned against intensive isometric exercise.[17]
Patients with repaired aortic coarctation are known to have an increased risk of coronary artery disease.
As patients transition from adolescent to adult care, it is important to provide education on self-management and to help them build their medical knowledge. For example, ensure that they are equipped with the skills needed to make medical appointments and refill prescriptions, and that they understand the importance of lifestyle interventions such as weight management and non-smoking.[53]
