Monitoring

Following successful, uncomplicated contrast enema (air or contrast reagent) reduction of intussusception, patients should be admitted for a 24-hour period of observation.[3] Patients are observed for resolution of symptoms and potential development of possible complications such as recurrence or perforation. The risk of recurrence within 48 hours is low after enema reduction suggesting that patients who appear well should be considered for outpatient management with follow-up.[37][38] Following successful operative reduction, the average length of stay has been estimated to be 3 to 5 days.[34]

Patients are started on a diet shortly after non-operative reduction. Following operative reduction, a diet deemed suitable by the practitioner is initiated after the return of bowel function.

The presence of an associated viral illness is not uncommon and may affect the rate of recovery, or produce temperatures that may themselves complicate interpretation in a post-operative setting.
