Primary prevention

Prevention of oral leukoplakia relates primarily to the elimination of the typical risk factors of smoking and smokeless tobacco, areca nut (betel quid), and excess alcohol consumption.[57][58] However, some cases of oral leukoplakia are idiopathic in origin.

Secondary prevention

Prevention involves freedom from risk factor behaviour, and routine and thorough oral examination by members of the healthcare team.
