Investigations
1st investigations to order
clinical diagnosis
Test
Characteristic history and examination findings are often sufficient to diagnose the condition.
The Noble's, Ober's, and modified Thomas's tests are used in the diagnosis, but are provocative tests used in the physical exam, and not true diagnostic tests.[7]
Result
sharp or burning pain and tenderness roughly 2 cm superior to the lateral joint line. Pain may radiate proximally or distally. May also be local oedema and crepitation. Noble's, Ober's, and modified Thomas's tests positive.
Investigations to consider
MRI of knee
Test
In chronic ITBS, a thickened iliotibial band at the level of the lateral femoral epicondyle is seen.[7]
Result
normal or shows cystic or poorly defined signal intensity changes under the iliotibial band
ultrasound
Test
