Patient discussions

Patients should be aware that adherence with medication monitoring is vital, and be advised that metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors should be avoided or reduced.

The risks associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (csDMARDS), targeted synthetic DMARDs (tsDMARDS), and biological DMARDs (bDMARDS) should be emphasised. Patients should be counselled about adverse effects on gut, liver, and cardiovascular and renal toxicities.

Patients receiving immunosuppressant therapy should be taught how to recognise signs and symptoms of infection, and advised to seek medical attention if they become ill.
