Primary prevention

Anecdotally, ultraviolet (UV) protection (UV filtration in spectacles and sunglasses) or antioxidants may slow the progression of cataracts. However, there is no established way to prevent cataract formation.

There is no consistent evidence from randomised controlled clinical trials to suggest that supplementation with antioxidant vitamins (beta-carotene, vitamin C, or vitamin E) prevents or slows the progression of cataract.[31][32][33][34]

Secondary prevention

Professional support and referral for counselling, vision rehabilitation, or social services are recommended where available, particularly for patients with functionally limiting postoperative vision impairment.

Vision rehabilitation should be person-centred, exploring the broader impact of vision loss on patients’ lives. Vision rehabilitation seeks to optimise patients’ reading, daily living activities, safety, well-being, and community engagement.[137]
