Patient discussions

Advise patients to adhere strictly to diet and medication regimens to avoid long-term consequences of this disorder.

Give diet and lifestyle advice, including information on reducing salt intake. Protein restriction may be advised based on the level of proteinuria and/or kidney function; however, very low-protein diets should be avoided.[1] Encourage patients to increase physical activity, maintain a healthy weight, and stop smoking.

Discuss the importance of frequent follow-up to support patients to achieve aggressive blood pressure goals and to monitor disease progression by protein in urine and renal function.

If patients receive corticosteroids or immunosuppressive treatments, discuss the increased risks of infection and osteoporosis. Consider the use of additional medications to avoid infections and osteoporosis.
