Patient discussions

Airway clearance in bronchiectasis is paramount, so patients should be instructed to complete mucus clearance techniques 2 to 3 times per day. Children will need the input of their parents or carers, and training in developmentally appropriate techniques should be given. A healthy, balanced diet is essential for all patients, and adults should aim for an optimal body mass index >18.5 kg/m². After referral to pulmonary rehabilitation, adult patients are encouraged to continue a similar exercise programme on a regular basis. For children, exercise is encouraged on an ongoing basis as part of an active lifestyle. It is recommended that patients or their parents/carers contact their healthcare provider at the first indication of exacerbation (fever, change in sputum colour or volume, or dyspnoea). A self-management plan can help patients to monitor their symptoms, recognise exacerbations, and know when and how to seek medical help.[46]
