Risk factors

  • exposure to infected people, animals, or soil
  • exposure to fomites, including hat, combs, hairbrushes, and upholstery

  • hot, humid weather
  • obesity
  • hyperhidrosis
  • frequenting public bathing areas while barefoot
  • deformities of the feet
  • recurrent trauma to the skin
