Complications
Inflammatory, painful, boggy scalp mass associated with untreated tinea capitis; may be treated with prednisolone. Can result in scarring alopecia.
Especially seen in the vesiculobullous form when maceration is present and there is persistent occlusion due to damp footwear, poor foot hygiene, hyperhidrosis, residing in areas of high humidity, or combination of these factors.
Streptococcal infection is the most typical bacterial superinfection. Topical antibiotics, such as mupirocin, may be effective for minor infections; if there is widespread cellulitis and maceration or if predisposing conditions (diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, immunocompromising conditions) are present, then systemic antibiotics with broad-spectrum coverage to include streptococci may be required for 7 to 10 days.
